Jivamukti Yoga is a method which reintegrates the physical, philosophical, and spiritual aspects of Yoga. Jivamukti was developed in 1984 by its world-famous founders, Sharon Gannon & David Life, and is practiced around the world. Class involves a vigorous flow of postures (vinyasa) that is intended to challenge you on many levels. Each class revolves around a
theme based on ancient wisdom traditions and emphasizes the importance of practicing with an elevated intention.
The name Jivamukti is taken from the Sanskrit
jivan (individual soul) and
mukti (liberation), and is meant to emphasize the focus on achieving spiritual liberation here and now.
The five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga are:
- Scripture ~ teachings from ancient Sanskrit scriptures.
- Bhakti ~ devotion; finding a Transcendent purpose for our lives.
- Ahimsa ~ a non-harming, compassionate lifestyle.
- Music ~ use of chanting and uplifting music to elevate the spirit.
- Meditation ~ reconnecting to our true inner selves.
The Jivamukti method is one of nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga. You will find Jivamukti Centers in NYC, Detroit, Toronto, London and Munich, and certified Jivamukti teachers all around the world. Connect with the Jivamukti community in DC by visiting our website:
