Go Car Free - Sept 22

banner1The Car Free Days Campaign

Scientists and the world's governments agree. Our carbon emissions are responsible for the dramatic rise in global temperatures. We are already seeing the consequences and it is time to act. Governments and scientists can't solve this problem alone. Each one of us is responsible. And each one of us must be part of the solution.

This web site shows you how you can make a difference.

What is kirtan?What is kirtan?

Kirtan (from the Sanskrit word for singing) is easily learned and instantly memorable. The form is simple: a lead group calls out the melodies. The crowd responds, clapping and dancing as the rhythms of tablas, finger cymbals, harmonium, tamboura, electric bass and guitar build and accelerate. The mantras are projected overhead, making them simple to follow.

Sanskrit is the mother tongue of many modern languages, and a kind of periodic table of elemental sound-meaning. The mantras are primarily recitations of names given to the divine. But perhaps the true understanding of the mantras can be found in the sense of unity, well-being and timelessness that they elicit. Ecstasy is both the process and the product.

"Listen friend, this body is his instrument. He draws the strings tight, and out of it comes the music of the universe."

This month's inspiration from Manorama

Sanskrit: Sound as a Bridge to Silence
by Manorama

When one chants a Sanskrit mantra the resulting vibration that occurs from its utterance carries the mind and heart of the listener in and in to the source of vibration itself, which is silence.

In Yogic practice, meditative silence is the most essential element to cultivate. According to Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, meditative silence is more than the mere absence of speaking, rather silence is the absence of thinking. Meditation occurs when the mind is in a state of balance, when thoughts subside from bombarding the mind. Studying Sanskrit and chanting mantras aid the aspirant in achieving inner quiet in the mind.

Sanskrit is made up of predominantly vibrational sounds. The more resonant a sound is the more it echoes both internally and externally. By chanting Sanskrit, one encourages wakefulness to sound overall but in a whole new way, that is, as manifest vibration which leads one to the internal echo within.

Manorama's mix of earthy charm, deep scholarship and humourous teaching style were born from years of close study with her Guru, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, the founder of Ananda Ashram.

She continues her studies in Sanskrit working closely with the reknowned Acharya,
Dr. R.K. Sharma, president of IASS. She is a graduate of Columbia University.

Angela Cerkevich first discovered yoga from her father at the age of 7. By college she grew more curious and began attending regular classes. After a brief, but interesting acting career, she dove into the yoga scene head first and remained there full time. Though her yoga education began with Kundilini- based exercises, she has since moved from Bikram, to Vinyasa and more recently Anusara styles for inspiration. Angela also practices Thai Massage at to complete and complement her practice.  Her enjoyment in giving massage comes from a deep desire to balance science with spirituality. She considers knowledge of the human body to be the key to understanding the human psyche.  She brings a sense of fun and experimentation while also offering practical aspects of yoga philosophy to her classes. She makes every effort to give students a sense of their own, individual power and creativity through a challenging yoga class. "Through asana we take away the ego's best friend and star witness and we turn it into a vessel through which Spirit can be expressed in this world." --Darren John Main

Thoughts from Rumi

rumi

"There is a community of the spirit.

Join it, and feel the delight

Of walking in the noisy street,

And being the noise

Drink all your passion.

And be a disgrace.

Close both eyes

To see with the other eye.

Open your hands,

If you want to be held.

Sit down in this circle.

Quite acting like a wolf, and feel

The shepard's love filling you.

At night, your beloved wonders.

Don't accept consolations.

Close your mouth against food.

Taste the lovers mouth in yours.

You moan, "she left me." "he left me."

Twenty more will come.

Be empty of worrying.

Think who created thought!

Why do you stay in prison

When the door is so wide open?

Move outside the tangle of fear thinking.

Live in silence.

Flow down and down in always

Widening rings of being."

Christ-like Bin Laden Image Stirs Debate in Australia
Thu Aug 30, 2007 Reuters

A debate about the Australian artworks attracted almost 400 comments on the news.com.au Web site.

"One could only compare Osama with Saddam or Hitler, but Jesus came to Earth not to terrorize, but to save mankind," wrote a blogger named Shirley. Another blogger, Marc, praised the artworks' shock value. "Art is supposed to provoke thought and debate...to offend you and make you think," he wrote.
